Teeth Whitening : All You Need to Know

Even though teeth are rarely white naturally, most people strive to have teeth that are as white as possible.  This can prove difficult since it is normal for teeth to darken over time. In this article, learn more about the types of whitening, how they work and how effective they are.

Why Are the Teeth not White?

There are many reasons that prevent the teeth from remaining completely white. Furthermore, aging and genetics are the principal cause. Teeth can also appear darken due to stains from certain foods or beverages, such as coffee, or the use of tobacco products.  Another factor people rarely consider is that the perceived whiteness of one’s teeth depends a great deal on his or her skin tone and any make-up they are wearing.

Whitening Products Sell in Pharmacies

That is the reason for the explosion of the teeth whitening treatment industry.  Teeth whitening is one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures.  Generally speaking, there are two types of whitening products: surface whiteners and bleaches.

Surface whiteners use abrasives to remove surface stains that are darkening one’s teeth.  Popular surface whiteners are sold as chewing gums or special toothpastes.  Since these products are only using a finer version of the ingredients found in ordinary toothpaste, it does limit its effectiveness.  Everyone can use them at home, without much restriction. Nevertheless, the results will not be sustainable.

Bleaches are typically peroxide based and alter the color of the tooth itself. Therefore, over-the-counter products cannot replace professional bleaching.

2 types of whitening in the clinic

People who want to have their teeth whitened can consult their dentist to find out what treatment is best for them.

There are 2 types of dental whitening:

  1. Vital whitening, which removes tooth stains caused by food, tobacco and age. This method brings back teeth.
  2. Non-vital whitening restores whiteness to the tooth that has blackened due to treatment, such as root canal treatment.

3 professional whitening techniques

The methods used by the dentist will vary depending on the number of teeth to be treated and the degree of coloring.

  1. Applying the bleach product to your teeth and using heat to activate it;
  2. Brushing with a special toothpaste that contains bleach;
  3. Using a custom mouth guard filled with a bleach product.

Limits of whitening

None of these whitening treatments are permanent solutions. The stains and discolorations will come back. For example, individuals who smoke heavily could see the stains return within a month. Those who avoid habits, foods and beverages that cause stains could go 6 at 12 months without needing another treatment.

It is important to consult your dentist before starting any whitening process. Bleaches especially, since not all discoloration will respond to the product.  A dentist can tell if the treatment will be successful by determining what caused the discoloration in the first place. Patients who have root canals, fillings or crowns should also consult with a dentist beforehand to ensure it is effective.
